Deferred Gift Annuity

Deferred Gift Annuity

J. Calvin Wenger, D.C.
1956 Davenport Campus

My experiences with chiropractic and Palmer College started very early in life since my father, the late Dr. S. G. Wenger, was a 1937 Palmer graduate. Choosing to follow in my dad's footsteps, I graduated from Palmer College in September 1956 and moved back to Pennsylvania. I married my wife, Shirley, while a student at Palmer; we have three children and seven grandchildren. I have also been an active, ordained minister in the Lancaster Church of the Brethren since 1976 and celebrated 50 years as a member of the Lancaster County Speakers Bureau.

Licensed in November 1956, I joined the Wenger Chiropractic Group, which was started by my father in 1938, and have been in practice ever since. We have been located in the same office building for 52 years. There are currently seven chiropractors working in our clinic, four of whom are Palmer graduates. We also have one medical acupuncturist and four massage therapists.

In 1994, my wife and I were asked by Palmer College to consider a charitable deferred gift annuity. It seemed like a win-win deal for both the College and for us. We would make a charitable gift to Palmer College, and then at a later date in our lives and at a time of our choosing, we would start to receive fixed payments for the duration of both of our lives. We also received a federal income tax deduction at the time of the gift. Now we receive a check each quarter and the best part is that a portion of the income is tax free. Giving this deferred gift annuity gave us a genuine feeling of helping others.

It is important to us to give back and support Palmer, and we have continued to do so through the President's Club, various capital campaigns and our will. Palmer is the source of our inspiration and education and plays a part in everything that happens in our professional career. To that, we owe a great deal. It is great to receive, but it is greater yet to give. However, in the long run, you really can't give anything away; it is a law of the kingdom of God.
